If you were to make a model car?
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:45:50 PM »
I'm making a cake topper, this will be my first car, and will be the Only fools and horses robin reliant...

What would you use to bulk up the inside?  I've tried tinfoil and it just isn't giving me a smooth surface, I don't want to use clay as this will be too heavy as there are other things to go ontop with the car....

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Ultralight clay? I've not used it, but believe it's meant to be a lot lighter than normal clay and you could possibly use it for the inner part.

Just a thought/suggestion.

Cardboard, sellotaped together?  Might be able to get a reasonable likeness in card if you draw it on some squared paper.

Thanks ladies

I haven't heard of ultra light before, but as I need to do this week I think I'll try the cardboard route as I don't really have a lot of time to try out a new clay... I'm going to try tinfoil then cardboard ontop of it and see how I get on.

I suggest sealing the card with white glue before you cover it, in case the card leaches the clay too much while you're making it.   Also it will help it to hold  :)

Thought I would show the final product, I ended up using cardboard as a support for the clay and it worked a treat (just sellotaped it together.

Thanks a mill for the suggestions..

That's wonderful - well done!

I love Only Fools, you captured the car perfectly!

Thanks everyone, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.. hopefully the bride and groom will be happy with it, as far as I know it's a surprise that they don't know anything about... would be great to be a fly on the wall..xx
