Which Glue? Emulsion Paint?
« on: May 28, 2011, 08:07:59 PM »
I need advice on which glue to use on some wall art that I have thinking about doing. I want to put polymer clay of different thickness on a canvas. It will have to be done in small sections and stuck on after it has been "cooked". I don't want bits falling off after a time and did think about putting wire or paper clip type things (can't remember the correct name) in the back of the larger pieces and securing them together with the glue. However I'm not too sure which glue to use.
Also I know its ok to use acrylic paint on "cooked" clay, but has anyone tried emulsion paint? I want it to match something else.

Thanks, Carol
Carol

I used Berol Marvin medium to glue my tiles. Not on canvas but on wood, but it should work on canvas.

Generally speaking, I would use use white PVA glue for gluing polymer clay to any porous surface. I have found this to be very sucessful, but it is important to scratch up the back of the baked clay first with some coarse sandpaper to give the glue a key to grab on to

As for emulsion paint, in theory, it should be fine with polymer clay as it is an acrylic paint. But as with all things polymer, do a test first with the paint you are hoping to use just to be sure it dries ok and doesnt react oddly with the baked polyclay.

I hope that helps, and please keep us posted on the progress of your project won't you? It sounds fascinating and I am very nosey for it already!

I've used PVA glue as well, but again that was to wood and not to canvas. It took a while to dry but stuck OK.

Eva - that is a beautiful piece, I love it. Did you make it for yourself? (Now I'm being nosey!!!)

Thanks :) Yes I made it for myself  it's  hanging in my bedroom ! It's a bad photo....looks like it's curving but it's not :) It's about 30 x 20 cm big and I got inspired looking in Laurie Mikas book. Took forever to finish ;)

That's beautiful!

I shall be taking part in an inchies swap later in the year (must get on and make some!!) and thought I'd mount them all so this topic about glue is very useful!
