Personality in Faces - Challenge!
« on: March 31, 2015, 06:26:45 PM »
Mel and I are making faces with personality - as much personality as we can get into a face (or head).

Does anyone else want to join in?

We were talking about how you can add personality to a head (or face) with different eyebrows, a different shape to a nose, a different sized nose, a scar, thin lips or full lips, a snear, big ears, smaller ears, high or low cheekbones, big cheeks, flat cheeks, square jawed, pointy jaw... the possibilities are HUGE!

Go on, give it a go!

Hmm - that is true......

Actually, at the moment l am completely distracted by a fantastic online (free) course l'm doing, called 'Genesis', taught by Christine Dumont.  I'm thinking about it all the time though not getting outside to the clay as much as l would like.

Better not watch this space!

Okay, Here's how far I've got with my "Head with Personality":

I've only marked in the cheek grooves, and he needs more delicate work on ears, lips, forehead and cheeks.  I think maybe the nose is okay though.

How are you doing, Mel?

Anyone else?

Haha...like it! It's a bit like my expression when I squish the face I've spent 2 hours shaping! Can't wait to see the finished item. Hopefully I'll post one in a few days time.

Great Teeth2faces, I can't wait to see what you come up with.
The trouble with me is I find it hard to know if I've finished or not, and every time I pick it up or add some detail I also seem to add some damage, nicking a bit of clay out by accident with a fingernail, putting fingerprints on as I try to smooth them out.

Here's a snear and a scar:

Well, this is as far as I got with this. SS is getting so soft I'm deforming parts I'm not working on! Squished this one out of frustration lol. Going to have to try a firmer clay or starting leaching SS

Loving your finished face Fran

Thanks Carrie.

Teeth2faces,
Yes I get deforming of bits I'm not working on, I usually stick it in the fridge for an hour or so, or just leave it in overnight.

They do say that the sculpey grey one is firmer, but I've not tried it. Leeching can work but you have to be careful you don't leech out too much and make it crumbly.

Oh and this face isn't finished yet, I've got to add texture, (plus his cheek grooves are folding the wrong way, gotta correct that.) and his forehead is also rather low as yet, l'll be adding to that when I add a Jump ring up there.

I'm thinking what to use to add lip texture, I'm starting to model with needles now, to get finer details, although I'm not sure what... been doing other things so I need to get back to my face.

What do you mean you squished it?  Do you mean 'destroyed'?  (horrified expression) Or just slightly dented?  I love all those wrinkles.

Yes Fran, I plucked out his eyes and flattened his face lol.

Regarding lip texture.... I have a book in which the author makes a hair texture tool by pressing needles into raw clay shaped like a cone then baked. This is then pressed into clay to replicate hair. I was wondering if something like this could be used. I have tried using a fine needle but find it tears the clay or takes an age to do each tiny wrinkle individually.
Just a thought!

Sure did Carrie...it was driving me mad! Every time I worked on the mouth I squashed the chin and every time I tried to correct the chin the mouth closed! It was almost as if the jaw was hinged. I should have left it or put it in the fridge for a while but my frustration got the better of me lol. Kind of regret it now  :(
