using foil to fill beads?
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:37:59 PM »
Do all of you do this? cover a foil base.. I have heard people mention it is it quite common practice and how do you do it?  I have visions of the clay being too week as you are only applying a layer..

The question I should be asking is should I be using this technique on big beads?

Hi Karen

Check out the Glazed Beads tutorial I put up in the bead section, as I have a photo of using a foil base for beads
http://www.polyclay.co.uk/index.php/topic,17.0.html

You are right that the layer of clay over the foil should not be too thin, make it at least 3 mm thick,  and you need to use a strong clay.

I wouldn't say it is VERY common practice, but it is a good technique if you want to make quite large beads and not have them too heavy.

I have never tried this but really want to make some big beads this Easter holiday, so I'll be trying it.
Any tips?, does the foil shrink/expand. How tightly to roll the foil and what about piercing the hole?

Will be interesting to hear how it works for you. I have tried this but with disastrous results., the beads would just not come out round!

I think it is a technique that lends itself to "freeform" shapes more than perfect rounds.

But the more tightly scrunched up and smoothed you make the foil core, the better.

It's best to pierce the foil shape before you cover it.

I did give this a try a while back and I also couldn't get them perfectly round but to be honest I quite like them a bit misshapen. It does save on clay too but you must put quite a thick layer over the foil or it may not be strong enough after baking. I shall post some pics soon so you can see them.

As Emma says, it is for freeform beads, you make your ball of foil and then cover it in clay. This allows you to add texture to your beads and to have large beads but light. Another tip is to use cork clay as a base.
Let me know how you get on :)

I always use a foil core for my lump hens, its surprising how much clay I save by doing it this way. I haven't tried it on perfectly round beads though :)

How big are your hens? I had in my mind's eye that they were quite diddy for some reason.

Oh and where do you sell them? I am sure lots of us would be interested in helping the chickys and adopting one!

Ahh Emma thats very kind of you. The hens aren't that big and do vary(spelling) in size, the latest I have just finished measure about 8cm high and 8cm long and about 3-4 cm wide and when I have any extra going I sell them here: https://www.facebook.com/funkychickengifts or on my frugal living/chickeny forum, I do donate an amount to the hen rescue for everything I sell but this is usually to people who have no clue about polyclay and think it all very fasinating ;D

I'm a dimwit aren't I? I could have just looked at your signature. And why, whilst we are on the subject, have I never found and liked your chicky facebook page? (rectified!)

Please put a post here on the forum next time you have anything up for sale - would love to get me something hen-ish for my desk. Your work really makes me smile.
