Translucent Hollow Beads
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:06:11 AM »
I am making a hollow Translucent bead.
the last time i made one the cotton ball form left a fuzzy residue inside the bead.

So this time I melted a little Parafin Wax  and coated the ball first. Will let you know how it turns out !

The super thin  base clay sheet i covered the ball first with stuck really good and was easy to smooth.

Looking forward to seeing your result!

In Christine Dumont's online class we did of course learn how to prevent the clay sticking to the ball and getting that residue  ;)

I think you'll crack it  ;D

Experiments - I do love them!!!

I have read about 'lost wax' bead making in relation to hollow beads, and I love transucent *anything* so I await your experiment with baited breath...

I am on holidays ATM and am hoping to have more time to exepriment with making hollow beads next week . I ordered some oversized coffee mugs for my hubby for Christmas, and whilst he really liked the mugs, I had my eye on the water soluble "packing peanuts" that kept them safe on their postal journey!

I had a quick play the other week making translucent hollow beads over the cotton paper balls I stock. Because I made the trans very thin though and used Premo, they weren't particularly strong. Rather like ping pong balls  - delightfully squishable and so I murdered them for fun  :o :o :o

Looking forward to seeing your experiments Jan - which I suspect will be a LOT more sucessful than mine!

I used pardo for a very thin layer over waxed cotton ball.
Then added smallest hole on my extruder - stings of pardo and premo pearls.I will sand when I get home tonight and try to have pic tommorow.

Maybe a thin layer of resin painted over the top would add stability? (I feel an experiement brewing...)

Well I broke my bead while buffing but here are some pics and info
The Bead is/was 3/4 inch in diameter

Ok So the wax dipped cotton ball worked like a charm .
the last layer of cotton ball came out in almost a sheet. it still took about 15 minutes to pick out the most of the core cotton.
all the cotton pulled away with the wax!! no fibers left behind

In the picture witn the large cracked hole the spotty white is just wax residue . im sure a hot water soak and a Q-tip would easily get it out.

I wasnt real happy with the clearness or the translucent pardo - but i used clay that had been chopped up and reconditioned so it may have worked air into it

for how thin i sanded it the bead was quite hard.  Until my buffer threw it against the wall
