Jump Rings for Chain Maille
« on: October 05, 2012, 08:04:19 AM »
Hi
I am thinking of trying to make Chain Maille jewellery and use some Fimo beads with it. Can anyone tell me if I need to buy jump rings specifically for chain maille or will any do? I don't have the tools to make my own so I need to buy them.

As far as I know, any will do - but a lot of chain maille artists prefer to make their own so they can control how perfect the rings are. Machine-made jumprings are not always perfectly round.

You don't need many tools to make your own jumprings. Some sort of mandrel is needed to wrap the wire around
(check these out at EJR Beads - I love them for making jumprings!

Other than that, something to cut the jumprings afterwards. Some people prefer to use a proper jeweller's saw, others snip the jumprings apart with wire cutters. I tend to do the latter because I am a bit pants at doing the former!)

Not as hard as I thought then.

I think I will buy a few to have a go with then try making. I will add tools to my Xmas list.

Thank you

Make sure you buy decent quality ones though, because otherwise the ends won't meet neatly and with a satisfying click" and also if they aren't strong ones whatever you make won't hold its shape.

A set of knitting needles is useful for mandrels - check out charity shops  ;)

Well I have finished it. The prototype. My first ever chain maille bracelet. I know I need better quality jump rings. I bought a few locally to get the feel of how to do it.

Need more rings now and work out how to add my fimo beads to them.

Well done Marion that looks pretty good  :)

Getting quality jump rings certainly makes a huge difference to the end product.
